It’s been a hot minute since the last time Angry Birds was on a Nintendo console, but for those of you who fondly recall the venerable franchise that Shigeru Miyamoto was once quoted in 2012 as having said it was an idea he wished he had come up with, we have some interesting news. It would appear that SEGA is set to purchase Angry Birds developer Rovio for a deal alleged to be worth $776 million. That’s a whole lot of bacon (get it? Because the birds fight pigs? I’ll show myself out).
Rovio has been up and down financially in recent years, while SEGA is seeking to utilize Rovio’s resources to expand its own operations, particularly in the mobile space. Thus, this deal has a lot of potential to be a boon for both companies. Discussing the deal, SEGA Sammy president and Group CEO Haruki Satomi said “among the rapidly growing global gaming market, the mobile gaming market has especially high potential, and it has been Sega’s long-term goal to accelerate its expansion in this field.” Although this doesn’t necessarily mean Nintendo fans can expect to see the birds return to Switch, it will be interesting to see how SEGA chooses to utilize Rovio’s IP in the years to come.
