Sega recently told investors that it plans to double down on existing IPs after seeing lower-than-expected digital sales.
The news came during an annual financial briefing via Sega’s parent company. Apparently, their’s digital games segment has fallend “significantly below the initial plan” and, while it saw a 5.9% increase in digital sales compared to last year, it still saw a $17 million loss attributed to the digital market during that period. Meanwhile, physical games actually exceeded the company’s expectations.
Sega attributed the loss to both external competition in the market and internal issues, like various delays and a lack of successful games during the period.
Sega’s aim going forward will apparently be to developer fewer titles and place a greater emphasis on its existing IPs. This should hopefully mean higher quality games from the classic franchises that we all know and love (Sonic in particular has been on a rollercoaster ride over the years).
What classic franchises do you think are due a comeback? Perhaps we can expect a new Altered Beast game on Switch? Let us know in the comments below.
