While the Samurai Shodown series might not carry the same weight as the likes of Street Fighter or Mortal Kombat among modern fighting fans, those who remember the days of 16-bit fighters likely have at least one or two good memories of the weapon-based fighter. Unfortunately, while the series has been kept alive through retro releases and collections, there hasn’t been a new entry in over a decade, but that is going to change soon.

Simply titled Samurai Shodown, this new entry takes a note from the Street Fighter playbook with an upgrade to 3D, cel-shaded graphics while maintaining the classic 2D gameplay. This entry will feature 16 fighters at launch, with three being brand-new, though more will be joining later on as DLC. Beyond the standard story, versus, and practice modes, there will be a new form of AI combatant that actually learns from your fighting style and can then be uploaded to the leaderboards, which of course means you can then download other people’s AI data and fight against them in offline modes.

Samurai Shodown won’t hit Switch until near the end of 2019, however it will be available to play at PAX East from March 28-31. A group of current and former SNK developers will also be on hand for a panel discussing the series.
