Stardew Valley has been one of the industry’s most pleasant surprises in recent years: a farming and life sim that takes inspiration from Harvest Moon but expands the concept to so many more facets of day-to-day life in a farming community. The fact it was made by a single developer just makes the success all the more impressive. However, that one man, Eric Barone, still can’t figure out how to fix a glitch that has persisted from back when the game first launched on PC.

For some reason, there is one character in the game who will randomly disappear for some players and never be seen again. What makes it more interesting, though, is that the glitch carries some unintended, and tragic implications. The character in question is Pam, a woman who fell into a drunken depression after losing her driving job when the local bus stopped running. While players can try to help Pam and maybe even court her daughter, there always remains a chance she will simply vanish, leaving the conclusion to her sad story unknown.

While players generally prefer their games to function properly and developers no doubt want their games to work as they had panned, it might be for the best that this glitch remains unfixed. Considering the fact Stardew Valley is pretty much all about stepping into an alternate life, it seems all the more realistic that sometimes things can happen suddenly and without resolution. So, maybe if Barone can’t fix the issue, he can’t find a way to embrace it and integrate it within the game’s world.
