The announcement of a Pokémon live-action film certainly raised eyebrows last year following the mega success of Pokémon Go. While video game films are often announced and quietly canceled, the Pokémon movie, based on the Detective Pikachu game, has been picking up quite a bit of steam of late. The film has now cast its main role: Ryan Reynolds as the voice of Detective Pikachu!

According to The Hollywood Reporter, the film will center around a parent’s disappearance, and Detective Pikachu’s attempt to help reunite father and son. Reynolds will not only voice the character, but also provide motion capture, as well.

So far, there is no release date set for the film. The Detective Pikachu video game was never brought outside of Japan, so it will be interesting to see if Nintendo and The Pokémon Company decide to translate the game with the film’s new star. Stay tuned to Nintendojo for more information as it develops!
