Let’s be real, it was bound to happen. Conspicuously absent from the launch version of Nintendo Switch 2 was an OLED screen for the console’s handheld mode. It was notable given what a big deal the original Switch’s OLED model was, with many consumers switching (a pun!) to and preferring the prettier screen. Switch 2 has been on the market for a couple of years now, but outside of some Joy-Con 2 color options, and a new swappable battery version for Europe, nothing has changed since launch.

If the rumors turn out to be true, then consumers might be in for their first Switch 2 hardware revision. A Switch 2 OLED model has become a talking point online, with ZDNet Korea alleging the device is in the pipeline and might even be a collaboration with Samsung, which would be helping with the screen. Nintendo, however, is reluctant to pull the trigger given the already expensive nature of electronics production at the moment. A new OLED model would of course be more expensive than a stock Switch 2; with the console now at $500, how much will consumers be willing to shell out at this point?
If the console does become a reality, it might drop late 2027 or early 2028. We’ll keep you all posted, but in the interim, would be interested in an OLED version of Switch 2? Share with us in the comments and on social media!

Wish this was a launch day option but Nintendo wouldn’t be Nintendo if it wasn’t a year or two behind the current edge. :-D
