Nintendo has long been known for being behind the times when it comes to online play and features, and while that is still true to an extent, they have made significant strides in recent years. However, they have been on-top of the cross-platform play trend, allowing Switch owners to compete with players on other consoles in titles like Fortnite and Rocket League. Surprisingly, Sony was very hesitant to follow in its competitors footsteps. While Switch, PC, and Xbox One players were all playing together, Sony wouldn’t let anyone out of the walled garden that was PSN, saying that cross-play simply wasn’t necessary. Players, however, begged to differ as they took umbrage with Sony’s stance, eventually forcing them to reverse course.
Since Sony’s change, Fortnite received cross-platform support but Rocket League players have had to wait until now. Next time you boot up the popular car combat/soccer game and enter matchmaking, there’s a chance you’ll finally be in a lobby with PSN players. Furthermore, cross-platform parties will be implemented soon as well. Though an official date hasn’t been confirmed yet, the game’s next update will add this feature.
The number of cross-platform games is generally limited as it is right now, but it will undoubtedly continue to grow. It will be interesting to see if Sony is timelier with its efforts to allow other current, and of course future, games to take advantage of this feature. I think most gamers would agree everyone will be better off when cross-play becomes the expected norm.
