As strange a crossover as it might have seemed at first, the combination of Mario, Sonic, and the Olympics has proven an appealing enough proposition to justify a fifth entry in the bi-annual franchise, and now we know when we’ll get to play the two mascots’ take on the upcoming Rio Games.
Fans of actual sports will have to wait until August for the competition’s opening ceremonies, but gamers will be getting a head start. Mario & Sonic at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games will release on 3DS on March 18 in North America. The European market has yet to receive a release date, but Japanese gamers will actually have even more of a head start when it launches there in February. The Wii U version does not currently have an announced release date.
Personally, I can wait to see Sonic once again inexplicably lose at any and all sports requiring fast running. And let’s hope they let Bowser do a gymnastics floor routine!
