Pokémon Sword and Shield had been met with a wave of skepticism by pundits and fans on social media prior to launch. While some objections, like the truncation of the National Pokédex (dubbed “Dexit”), were understandable, others were far more questionable and have even yielded death threats by particularly disgruntled detractors. In short, no Pokémon game has ever seen the level of skepticism and venom that Sword and Shield have been subjected to leading up to release. However, if the sales numbers for the two titles in the week since the games have been released into the wild are anything to go off of, the noise was coming from a very vocal minority.
According to a press release put out by Nintendo, Pokémon Sword and Shield have moved a combined two million units in the United States, alone. Globally, that number soars to 6 million combined units. According to the press release, “[t]his past weekend, millions of people began their Pokémon journeys through the new Galar region,” said Nick Chavez, Nintendo of America’s Senior Vice President of Sales and Marketing. “With such a momentous launch, Pokémon Sword and Pokémon Shield have proven to be two of the must-have games this holiday season.” Indeed, the success of these two titles is among the best ever on Nintendo Switch.
