The latest issue of Famitsu in Japan has revealed a new entry in Sega’s popular Puyo Pop series of puzzle games, which is celebrating its 25th anniversary this year. Puyo Puyo Chronicle will be the franchise’s first release on 3DS and will bring with it some new ideas as well.
The new game will add some RPG mechanics in the form of a new story that revolves around a young girl, Arle, who is trying to return to her own world after getting stuck in an another dimension. Beyond the central plot, there will be more than 60 side quests. Battles will resemble the series’ classic gameplay, but exploring and interacting with the world will be done in 3D environments filled with fully rendered character models.
For those unfamiliar with the series, the core gameplay is a competitive falling-block puzzle game in which the lines you clear are used to attack your opponent. In addition to these mechanics being used for fighting AI baddies in the story, Chronicles will also feature more standard puzzle modes that include numerous variations on the core mechanics introduced in other entries in the series. Multiplayer will also be included, both in the form of competitive and co-operative play.
There will also be a Anniversary Box edition of the game, which comes with plenty of extra goodies including a theme, soundtrack, and drama CD.
Puyo Puyo Chronicle will come out in Japan on December 8, 2016. Nothing has been said yet regarding a release in other markets.
