For those keeping track at home, we’re on the third console generation that gaming journalists and pundits alike have declared would be the “final” such lifecycle. Well, if their predictions were true, then it would be unlikely that PlayStation 4 would have been able to overcome the lifetime sales of Wii, a console that ceased production almost seven years ago. Except… PS4 did exactly that.

Wii sold 101.63 million units during its time on store shelves, an insanely impressive feat that clocked it in as the fourth-highest selling console of all time. In Sony’s latest earnings report, however, the company declared that PS4 has pushed past Wii with global totals now tracking at 102.8 million units shifted. That’s a lot of PS4s! For those who are curious, PlayStation 2 remains at number one with 155 million systems pushed to consumers around the globe.

So, which consoles rest at two and three in terms of sales rankings? That would be Game Boy (118.69 million) and Nintendo DS (154.02), respectively. Nintendo Switch, meanwhile, has sold 36 million units during its roughly two and a half years in stores. Fret not, friends— we have every confidence that Nintendo might be able to take the top spot again, one day. Until then, bravo to Sony for helping keep game consoles around and staving off ravenous journos itching to write their epitaphs.
