While fans of Sonic the Hedgehog haven’t had a lot of good years since Sega’s halcyon days, 2017 seems to be shaping up to be quite promising, at the very least! This year will see not one, but two major Sonic titles release on Nintendo Switch. Sonic Mania will give fans of the 2D Sonic titles a brand-new experience, while Sonic Forces, previously known as Project Sonic 2017, will be a new 3D title. The latter title got a pretty decent amount of focus at SXSW, where the new name was announced as well as a handful of additional details and an all-new gameplay trailer!

Sonic Forces will apparently draw from two of the blue blur’s better titles from the last decade. Like Sonic Generations, Forces will once again unite the “current” Sonic with his smaller, “original” counterpart, with both offering different styles of play. The title will apparently feature a third style, but Sega is currently keeping mum on details. The title will also bring back the Wisps from Sonic Colors, as well.

Shun Nakamura is the producer on Sonic Forces. Nakamura has previously worked on titles such as Billy Hatcher and the Giant Egg. On music, Tomoya Ohtani is in charge of the game’s music. Ohtani should be familiar to Sonic fans, as he has been a contributor to nearly every major release in the series since Sonic Adventure 2. Sega has released an instrumental version of the main theme from Sonic Forces, which we’ve embedded below!

So far, Sonic Forces sounds like a title fans will want to keep an eye on! While the game isn’t expected to release until later this year, fans will have Sonic Mania to keep them busy when it releases this summer. It certainly is encouraging to see Sega putting more focus on improving the franchise and keeping the fanbase happy. With two major releases this year, the company has a very big opportunity to do just that.
