While many a fan who played Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown was pleased by the game, the resultant sales were nonetheless disappointing. So much so that Ubisoft has opted to disband the team that developed the game. While this is disappointing news, it’s worth noting that Ubisoft alleges no layoffs came as a result of this decision.
Ubisoft has been having a very rough go of things lately, with Star Wars: Outlaws receiving a lukewarm reception from critics and fans alike, and the delay of Assassin’s Creed Shadows, which itself has been mired in controversy since it was announced owing to questionable interpretation of Japanese history and representation. The company’s stock prices have been tumbling and there’s even talk that Ubisoft might end up being purchased by Tencent if things don’t turn around.
Despite this maneuver, Ubisoft assures fans that there will be more Prince of Persia in the future, including the oft-delayed remake of Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time.

It’s both sad and encouraging to see Ubi in such trouble — they’ve crafted some wonderful games, but have also brought this upon themselves. Paid DLC to the point of bizarre pay-extra preorder tiers, NFT nonsense… Business decisions like that deserve to fail, full stop.
Sadly, it’s the dedicated teams working on high-quality games like this who pay the price. (Not to mention us fans!) Meanwhile, the CXOs and investment groups pushing those greedy decisions get to go on their merry way, to strip-mine the next beloved operation out of existence.
