For the second year in a row, Nintendo Global President Satoru Iwata will not be attending E3 in Los Angeles this June. Last year, Mr. Iwata could not make the trip across the Pacific due to health concerns. But rest assured, he is not sick again! This time, it looks like he is forgoing the trip because he is handling business that requires him to stay in Japan. Nintendo told IGN this in a statement:
“Nintendo’s focus for E3 this year will be showcasing the many games we have coming for both Wii U and Nintendo 3DS. Mr. Miyamoto and other members of our development team will be in Los Angeles to explain these games and the unique experiences that each offers. Mr. Iwata’s focus in this period will be on other areas of our business that require his presence in Japan.”
Mr. Iwata will still remain in contact with his team at E3 and will be keeping an eye on E3. We can expect the usual crew like Reggie, Shigeru Miyamoto, and Bill Trinen to be around. But these days, now that Nintendo has decided to show digital presentations at E3, does it really matter as much who is at the event? Press can only interview who attends the show, but Mr. Iwata’s absence would have a much greater impact if the company was giving a traditional press conference, for instance.
Despite his lack of presence at the actual show this year, I think it will be safe to say that President Iwata will make an appearance during Nintendo’s Digital Event on June 16. Hopefully he will be involved in another awesome presentation just like last year.
