More than 23 years into its existence, the Pokémon franchise is still in really good shape; the series just saw its first live-action movie perform well at the box office and a new set of games was recently announced for Nintendo Switch. All of this is great for both fans and The Pokémon Company itself, but at the end of the day, the bottom line is what matters most. Based on the most recent fiscal year, it looks like that is yet another success for the popular franchise.
The Pokémon Company closed out the fiscal year at the end of February and it was an immensely profitable one. Compared to the previous year, profits were up by about 50 percent, resulting in a total of $124 million. The release of the two Pokémon: Let’s Go games for Switch no doubt helped contribute to this, as has the continued success of Pokémon Go for mobile devices.
Next year’s numbers should be interesting to see, as well. Pokémon: Detective Pikachu is currently closing in on $400 million in global ticket sales and will almost certainly be ready for home release and streaming well before this fiscal year ends. Of course, the biggest earner will likely prove to be Pokémon Sword and Shield. The Switch games should be out in time for the holidays, but we’ll probably know more about their release window after tomorrow’s Pokémon Direct!
