Pokémon players are pretty used to being able to walk into a gym and challenge a gym leader when they’re good and ready, but a new requirements system in Pokémon: Let’s Go, Pikachu and Eevee! is changing up that mechanic, and some players are none too happy about it.

The games’ official website contains an information section titled, “What’s a Pokémon Gym?” which describes the basic concept longtime players are very familiar with: it’s a facility where burgeoning Pokémon Trainers challenge the Gym Leader to test their might, develop their skills, and earn a Gym Badge.

What’s not so standard is that players will now need to meet certain requirements to challenge the gym, such as having Pokémon of certain levels or types in your party. Gym Guides, people who usually greet Trainers at the entrance of Pokémon Gyms with advice on how to take down the Gym Leader, will now stand at the doors to ensure you meet the requirements to even enter in the first place. In the Pewter City Gym, for example, the Gym Guide asks you to show him a water-type or grass-type Pokémon before you can enter.

The changes seem to be in service of newer players; requiring players to be at a certain level addresses the issue of challenging a Gym Leader while under powered, while checking for Pokémon of a certain type in a player’s party ensures they’ll have at least one Pokémon with a type advantage over the Gym Leader. But this also takes away from the freedom of building a party to one’s tastes that Pokémon Trainers have enjoyed since Pokémon Red and Blue, and it definitely feels like hand-holding for more seasoned players.

However, the details on the new requirements are limited, so at this point conclusions are merely speculation until Nintendo reveals more information.
