Any review of Pokémon Go’s performance in 2016 is bound to include a lot of big numbers. The app rolled out across most major markets during the summer of last year and quickly set numerous records, both in terms of total downloads and revenue generated. While the buzz might have slowed as the year progressed, the game appears to have finished strong when you look at the end of year numbers.
Pokémon Go took the top spot as the most downloaded game for both iOS and Android, but considering the fact it’s a free download, that wouldn’t mean to much if it didn’t generate the dollars and cents in the long run. Thankfully for Niantic, the Pokémon Company, and Nintendo, the game had no problem bringing in the bucks; by the time 2016 ended, the game had generated $950 million. This considerable sum was enough to earn the number three app spot for revenue generated, though it is worth noting that one and two, Monster Strike and Clash Royale respectively, were on the market longer.
Of course, it will be interesting to see whether or not Pokémon Go can continue its success in 2017. The buzz surrounding the game definitely slowed down since its launch, but Niantic has been updating the game with new features and Pokémon, and considering the fact there are still many hundreds of creatures waiting in the wings, it is likely we’ll see that trend continue.
