Pokémon Comaster launched for mobile devices in Japan last year and represented yet another example of the Pokémon franchise moving into another genre, this time a strategic boardgame. Now, seemingly from out of nowhere, the game has been released in European and North American markets as Pokémon Duel for both iOS and Android.
The game stays true to the spirit of Pokémon as players build up parties of six Pokémon figures that they then take into competition against other players. The point of the game is to maneuver one of your creatures to the other player’s goal, so you’ll have to strategically move your Pokémon toward that end, while also defending your goal. Naturally, you and your opponent’s Pokémon will eventually cross paths and have to battle, so you’ll also need to consider your creature’s strengths, weaknesses, and move sets.
Pokémon Duel is free to play, but of course also has in-app purchases for those looking to more rapidly expand their figurine collection.
