The first live action Pokémon movie, Detective Pikachu, has gone on to make $436 million globally, propelling it past Warcraft to become the highest-grossing video game film of all time.
The previous record set by Warcraft was $433 million, which was enough to beat Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time. Of course, it helps that Detective Pikachu was reasonably well received critically. It currently holds a 67% fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes and also had the star power of Ryan Reynolds playing pikachu himself.
This is great news for Nintendo, Game Freak and Creatures and bodes well for future live action Pokémon films. In fact we already know that a sequel to Detective Pikachu is already in the works.
What did you think of Nintendo’s first live action film since the ill-fated Mario Bros. movie? Share your thoughts in the comments.
