For some people, the Pokémon games are about battling, and for others they’re about collecting, and the same can be said for the card game. For those interested in collecting, there’s definitely money to made, especially among rare, limited edition cards, and the upper limit has just been beaten by the latest copy of the rarest card to go to auction.
“Pikachu Illustrator” was released in January of 1998 as a special prize in contests held by Japan’s CoroCoro Comic magazine. All told, 39 copies of the card were given out and nowadays only 10 real, certified copies of the card are accounted for. This makes the card the rarest Pokémon card ever created, and that rarity led to the sale price of $195,000 at a recent auction.
This amount shatters the previous record for Pokémon cards, which was previously held by another copy of the same card that sold for just shy of $55,000 in 2016. Considering the price more than tripled in just three years, it’ll be interesting to see if these numbers will keep rising.
