Last week, Nintendo announced open voting for the next playable Super Smash Bros. characters. Since then, just about everyone in the industry has chimed in on which characters they’d like to see, no matter how seemingly unlikely.
The latest group to weigh-in is developer Playtonic Games. Comprised almost exclusively of former Rare staffers, the team is unsurprisingly encouraging their followers on Twitter to vote for two characters created by Nintendo’s former second-party developer: Banjo and King K. Rool! Earlier this week, Microsoft’s Phil Spencer gave Banjo-Kazooie fans some hope when he said “it would be cool” to see Banjo appear in the title. While there would likely be some licensing hoops for Nintendo to jump through for the character to appear, it’s certainly looking like a possibility!
King K. Rool is probably a bit more likely, however. Unlike Banjo, the character is owned by Nintendo, making him a very likely candidate should the voters encourage it. The king of the Kremlings first appeared in Rare’s Donkey Kong Country on SNES. Since then, he’s been a perpetual thorn in Donkey Kong’s side. K. Rool was also a favorite pick during our recent staff round table. It will be interesting to see if he makes the cut!

When it first opened, I voted for Count Bleck (yes, he’s a one-off, but so much move (and stage!) potential there). And then was all over voting for BK once Spencer gave his (granted, unofficial) blessing.
