Viewers of today’s Nintendo Direct were treated to the news that a demo for Capcom’s upcoming Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney – Dual Destinies would be available today on the 3DS eShop. The demo covers a chunk of the game’s opening trial and is the perfect introduction for new players and returning courtroom veterans. Our time with Dual Destinies was incredibly fun and showed great promise.
The visual update to 3D for characters and the backgrounds has been handled extremely well by Capcom, as it maintains the look and feel of previous installments in the series while freshening things up for a new audience. Familiar tunes from the first Ace Attorney game can be heard during gameplay, remixed but catchy as ever. The Dual Destinies demo also provides a glimpse of the FMV scenes that will be featured in the final release, though hearing Phoenix speak so extensively took some getting used to!
Finally, the demo introduces the game’s new courtroom gameplay mechanic, the mood matrix. Phoenix’s partner Athena uses a mixture of amplified hearing and technology to analyze the emotional fluctuations of witnesses on the stand. Using this new power, Phoenix can pinpoint parts of the witness’s testimony where their emotions seem to contradict the nature of their testimony. It was an intriguing twist that leaves the door open for a variety of clever interactions with witnesses that will hopefully be on full display when the game releases on October 24.
Be sure to download the Dual Destinies demo and let us know what you think of Phoenix’s return in the comments below!
