Earlier this week, Paramount released the first trailer for the Sonic the Hedgehog movie. While the trailer wasn’t all bad, it did showcase the character’s new design and fans were none too pleased. Sonic’s new look became the butt of memes, with a hefty dose of the derision directed towards his teeth. Apparently, the outcry has not fallen on deaf ears. Director Tom Fowler took to Twitter to announce a change for the character’s design.
Thank you for the support. And the criticism. The message is loud and clear… you aren't happy with the design & you want changes. It's going to happen. Everyone at Paramount & Sega are fully committed to making this character the BEST he can be… #sonicmovie #gottafixfast 🔧✌️

While certainly surprising, the move is not totally unprecedented. Transformers fans decried Paramount’s design for Megatron in the first Transformers film, and the studio went with a slightly different look, as a result. Still, Megatron only appeared towards the end of that particular movie. Since Sonic will undoubtedly appear in more of his own titular film, it does beg the question of how much work can be done between now and the scheduled November release date.
