Back in January we had reported that EA was suffering from the results of low sales of some of its bigger titles like Football Club (formerly FIFA) and Dragon Age: The Veilguard. What started as cratering stock prices has now transformed into layoffs. First, it was reported that EA has let go of 200 staffers, with the cuts hitting the EA Experience team hardest, whose duties focused primarily on customer care. Other staffers have been cut, as well. In a Statement, EA said “As part of our continued focus on our long-term strategic priorities, we’ve made select changes within our organization that more effectively aligns teams and allocates resources in service of driving future growth.”

EA subsidiary Respawn Entertainment, meanwhile, has been hit with 100 layoffs. Workers were in the early days of development on two projects that have now been canceled. There were also workers from teams handling Star Wars: Jedi and Apex Legends that have been jettisoned, too. All told, that’s about 300 souls now in need of work. This period of turmoil in the industry has been raging for nearly two years now, with no end in sight. Maybe those $70 and $80 games will be the magic cure the industry needs, but for now, let’s hope those workers are able to quickly relocate to new companies.
