Retro-inspired gaming has been in vogue for a few years now, resulting in everything from indie developers making games in the spirit of the titles they grew up with, to big AAA franchises looking to their past for inspiration. This approach to design has touched just about every imaginable genre, though it hasn’t really been seen too often when it comes to sports games. Old Time Hockey is changing that.

With its newest title, developer V7 Entertainment Inc. has looked back to EA’s NHL games from the 16-bit era for inspiration. While the game is rendered in 3D, those who played the NHL games on SNES will likely instantly recognize the isometric view to the action along with the core gameplay. However, Old Time Hockey isn’t just going to be a complete rehash of those older games, as the M-rating and the game’s trailer suggests it will be looking to an capture the rough-and-tumble reputation of the sport’s earlier years. Players will get to experience the action in story and arcade modes that support both single and multiplayer.

Old School Hockey was recently released for PC and PS4 and will be coming to Switch sometime this year. Unfortunately, a more specific launch window has yet to be announced, so be sure to keep an eye out for more details, especially if you are like me and spent far too much of your youth controlling Wayne Gretzky and Steve Yzerman in pixel form.
