Square Enix currently has a problem most companies would kill for: their latest game is selling too well in Japan. When they released Octopath Traveler, the publisher was being conservative with their sales estimates because, after selling through 90 percent of its initial shipment, the game is hard to find on store shelves.
This success prompted the first wave of restocks, but it looks like even that isn’t sufficient. Yodobashi Camera, a major chain of electronics stores in Japan, received more copies of the game, but within three hours they were all gone again. This prompted Square Enix to tweet an apology along with a promise that more copies would be coming soon.
The publisher also keeps reminding consumers that there are an unlimited number of copies available on the eShop, but that seems to have done little to reduce the demand for physical copies.
