Nintendo’s Priorities for Switch Don’t Include Video, Says Netflix

The ball is apparently in Nintendo’s court to get the app onto their console.

Nintendo is no stranger to video streaming services. Wii U owners were able to enjoy Netflix and Hulu on the console, and Hulu again committed to Nintendo when the app became available for download in the Switch eShop in November 2017.

Netflix, however, has remained absent — though they tweeted in January that they are “exploring the opportunity with Nintendo” to get the app onto the Switch. Despite this, no other details or a release date have been given.

Now, Scott Mirer, Netflix’s vice president of Device Partner Ecosystem, has shared some more details during a press Q&A panel in Silicon Valley on why the company has yet to strike a deal with Nintendo.

“In the case of the Switch, they [Nintendo] were very focused at launch not on video-use cases, but on gaming cases, video was not a priority for them. Whether that changes over time, we have a great relationship with them and look at the possibility of [supporting] the Switch. We each have opportunity cost around that, but at some point, it might happen.”

Mirer seems to be suggesting that the onus lies with Nintendo to get Netflix onto Switch and that Netflix is ready and willing to try and make it happen. The ball is in Nintendo’s court, but whether they make a move remains to be seen. Though it does seem a bit odd that, despite Nintendo’s supposed lack of priority on video, Hulu made the jump to Switch four months ago and Netflix still hasn’t.

I honestly don’t care. I can watch Netflix on my PS3, PS4, Wii U, 3DS, Vita, laptop, iPad, iPhone, and desktop. Whether the Switch lets me also is of literally zero importance to me.

    Also, what’s Hulu?

Totally agree. Still, it’s nice when you only need one device. I hate dragging around half a dozen smart devices with different apps. Back in the day, I just had my 3DS cause it had everything I needed: web browser, camera, video streaming, notebooks, etc. Now, I had to get myself an iPad. And I still need my phone. And, of course, I never go anywhere without the Switch. It would be nice if the Switch followed in the 3DS’s footsteps.

My Wii U is pretty much exclusively a Netflix device at this point, so yeah, I wouldn’t mind having Netflix on Switch. Plus, you have the portability aspect.
