In a rather surprising move, Nintendo has finally announced some of the features Switch owners can expect when the system’s dedicated online service launches this fall.
Perhaps the biggest announcement thus far is the inclusion of cloud saves for Switch titles. Many players have complained that, prior to today’s announcement, there seemed to be no way to back-up saves, and many were worried about losing save files for massive games such as Breath of the Wild and Super Mario Odyssey. Fortunately, that feature will finally arrive as a part of Nintendo’s dedicated online service.
As previously promised, the service will feature a number of older titles with enhanced online features. Twenty games will be offered when the service launches, of which Nintendo has announced ten:
- Balloon Fight
- Donkey Kong
- Dr. Mario
- Ice Climber
- The Legend of Zelda
- Mario Bros.
- Soccer
- Super Mario Bros.
- Super Mario Bros. 3
- Tennis
Nintendo has also announced multiple pricing options for the service. One month will cost $3.99, three months will cost $7.99, 12 months will cost $19.99 and a family membership (for houses with up to eight Switch units) will cost $34.99 a year. A dedicated smart phone app will also offer online chat, and other to-be-announced features.
All in all, it’s a fairly reasonable price for what fans get. While Switch owners will doubtlessly be a bit upset that they’ll soon have to pay to play games like Splatoon 2 and Mario Kart 8 Deluxe online, the price point is much cheaper than Sony or Microsoft’s alternatives.
