Waaaay back on this day of September 23 in 1889, Nintendo was founded as a humble playing card company in Kyoto, Japan.
Things have changed a lot since then, haven’t they? Since the founding of Nintendo, the planet Earth has experienced two world wars, countless technological advances, eight Radiohead studio albums, seven Police Academy films, the rise and fall of VHS, the birth of the film industry, and the invention of the modern toilet. Nintendo itself has undergone countless revisions and shifts since the company’s creation, going from playing cards to taxicabs, toys and everything in between. Perhaps I even made a podcast about the early history of Nintendo at some point…
Nintendo’s history since its entry into the video game business is much more well known. Our modern era has seen the release of six home consoles and no less than five generations of portable hardware. Nintendo has published hundreds and hundreds of video games, many of which are among the best-selling titles ever made. Whatever the future may bring for Nintendo, we can safely say its here to stay and hopefully bring us many more years of entertainment to come. So raise a glass and kick back and play your favorite Nintendo game.
Happy 126th birthday!
