European authorities have recently been updating the standards and practices for the processing of payments across the country and the deadline for these changes is fast approaching. While these new rules are designed to help protect consumers, it looks like there will be a side effect for 3DS and Wii U owners who like to purchase digital titles.
Starting in September, the eShop on 3DS and Wii U will no longer directly support credit card purchases. The work around involves first making sure your system and Nintendo account are linked, and then adding funds via your account before making the purchase. The process is outlined in more detail in the link provided in Nintendo of Europe’s official tweet below.
As of September, there will be changes to payment methods using credit cards on #3DS and #WiiU #eShop.

This is definitely a little inconvenient, but if it’s a change that will really increase security and lessen the risk of fraud it might be worth it. Also, it looks like Switch will be unaffected and that this issue is limited to Europe at the moment.
