Game-Key Cards have become a hot button issue for many a gamer since they were announced. In a nutshell, these cartridges don’t actually have games printed onto them; instead, consumers must download the game from the eShop and the cartridge acts as a “key” to allow the software to be played. Needless to say, the whole think smacks of cheapness, and it has some folks worried that Nintendo’s own wares will be confined to these faux cartridges.
Nintendo Life decided to reach out to Nintendo UK to ask about the situation and got the following reply:
We currently have no plans to use Game-Key Cards for Nintendo-developed titles.
Nintendo might be playing with words a bit here, as it’s entirely possible that games it publishes but doesn’t actually develop internally (like a Mario sports title, for instance) could be fated for Game-Key Cards. However, at the very least, it seems like the ilk of Super Mario and The Legend of Zelda will be printed directly onto Nintendo Switch 2 cartridges. Given the new $70 and $80 prices for Nintendo’s games, it seems the least the company can do for consumers.
