Nintendo has been hesitant to dip their feet into the VR pool. While Sony’s VR option has been available for some time now, the technology is still prohibitively expensive for most gamers. Next month, Nintendo will offer Switch’s first foray into VR, albeit in a much simpler, cheaper format when the Nintendo Labo VR Kit releases in stores!
The latest Labo offering will come in a variety of different options. For $39.99, players get everything they need to build their own Toy-Con VR Goggles as well as a Blaster Weapon and the accompanying software. There are also two expansions; Expansion 1 includes a Toy-Con Camera and Toy-Con Elephant, while Expansion 2 includes a Toy-Con Wind Pedal and Toy-Con Bird. Each expansion will retail for $19.99. Finally, diehard Labo fans can acquire everything in one package for $79.99.
“This new kit builds on the core tenets of Nintendo Labo – Make, Play and Discover – to introduce virtual reality in a way that’s fun and approachable for both kids and kids at heart,” said Doug Bowser, Nintendo of America’s Senior Vice President of Sales and Marketing. “We wanted to design an experience that encourages both virtual and real-world interactions among players through passing around Toy-Con creations.”
While the newest Labo expansion certainly won’t equal the same experience as that of PlayStation VR, it will be interesting to see if this will represent a stronger interest in the technology from Nintendo moving forward! The Nintendo Labo VR Kit will arrive in stores April 12.
