It has been known since Mario Kart World was announced that there would be a plethora of characters, costumes, and karts to unlock in the new game, but it wasn’t totally clear how that would happen. In our hands-on preview of the game we learned a little bit more, but today the curtain has been pulled back… well, a little more, but not all the way. Here’s how it works based on what we’ve learned:
Characters
This one is still a rather big question mark. Here are the prevailing theories:
- Free Roam: Meet and unlock players on the map
- Kamek: When Magikoopa uses his powers during a race, it will transform racers into new characters. If transformed into someone not currently on your roster, they’ll be added to it after the race.
Another theory that’s floating around has to do with the Dash Food items and collecting a certain number of these. However, according to the Direct and our time with the demo, this doesn’t seem to be true.
Costumes
Many characters seem to have multiple variants or costumes to unlock throughout Mario Kart World. Courses feature a little drive thru called Yoshi’s where the Dash Food item can be obtained. Roll through it to get a speed boost and watch as a random costume is applied to your racer. Once a costume is obtained, it will remain permanently unlocked moving forward.
Karts
Alas, kart customization is gone, but there are still a number of different rides to choose from. Some are available right from the outset, while others are squirreled away waiting to be unlocked. To get these new karts, players will have to collect coins. As certain collecting milestones are reached, new karts will become available.
Bear in mind, all of the info here is tentative until the release of Mario Kart World. There might be additional ways to unlock things that we’re not privvy to just yet. Once the game launches, we’ll have a full rundown of everything and let you all know.
