No game publisher in the industry has a pantheon of franchises quite like Nintendo. On one hand, this is a very good thing: it means that, even on consoles where the company struggled to find third party support, they still had a lot of diversity to fall back on. Unfortunately, it also means that some of the company’s smaller franchises can easily fall be the wayside. Fans of Wave Race, a series that began life on Game Boy before exploding in popularity on N64, certainly know how long the wait between titles can be.
Fortunately, there appears to be a glimmer of hope for Jet Ski fans! In a recent interview, Nintendo’s Shinya Takahashi teased a possible return for the franchise.
“We have been trying to make many games and that may be one of them … I personally love Wave Race!”
It’s certainly nice to know that Nintendo is aware that fans would like to see a new game in the series. It has, after all, been nearly 17 years since Wave Race: Blue Storm appeared on GameCube. We’ll likely have a better idea which franchises we can expect to see in Switch’s future at E3, which is rapidly approaching. In the meantime, Nintendo fans looking for a Jet Ski fix can check out Aqua Moto Racing Utopia which releases on Wii U later this week!
