Luigi finally got his time in the Switch spotlight with the release Luigi’s Mansion 3, but he also popped up in the Balloon World minigame added to Super Mario Odyssey as free DLC. However, it looks like Nintendo had originally been considering a different look for the popular sibling based on details in the The Art of Super Mario Odyssey book.
“We considered a drastic costume change for Luigi at first,” said Sho Murata, the game’s character art lead, “but we ultimately went with a simple look, since it would work well against the background of this game’s world.”
Murata also revealed other fun details about Luigi’s appearance; the colors of his balloons match the colors of the Super Famicom’s face buttons, and the case strapped to his back is covered in stickers of places and items from the Mushroom Kingdom to better contrast him with Mario’s adventures.
