News about game companies acquiring each other has been a hot topic in the industry for quite some time. Both Sony and Microsoft have been busy buying off many game companies, with Microsoft recently buying Activision Blizzard Entertainment just last year. Nintendo, meanwhile, has been quiet in regards to acquisitions. However, that has changed as it announced that it has acquired Shiver Entertainment and will be getting “100% of the outstanding shares” of the company. This isn’t the first time Nintendo felt like buying a company out of the blue. A few years ago, it purchased Dynamo Pictures (now named Nintendo Pictures) and Next Level Games, the studio behind the Mario Strikers, Punch-Out, and other games.
Shiver Entertainment was previously part of Embracer Group until it was sold for $247 million. Shiver’s role mainly was porting games such as Mortal Combat 11 and Mortal Combat 1 to Switch. They also developed a game called Scribblenauts Showdown. After the company’s acquisition, Nintendo said, “Shiver’s focus will remain the same, continuing commissions that port and develop software for multiple platforms, including Nintendo Switch.” With that in mind, we shall see what further plans Nintendo has for its newly acquired company.
