SNES Classic hasn’t even hit store shelves and yet we’re already hearing whispers about the potential for a Nintendo 64 Mini of some sort. Nintendo’s mid- to late-’90s era home console is reputedly going to get the micro treatment, hopefully replete with that system’s signature, triple-pronged controller.
The rumor was sparked when a trademark was filed by Nintendo in Europe for said controller. Which might seem innocuous enough from the outside, but it’s noteworthy because prior to the releases of NES and SNES Mini, Nintendo had done the some thing with the respective controllers for those consoles.
Nintendo hasn’t uttered a peep about the possibility of an N64 Mini, but the mind does begin to run wild thinking of all the possible 64-bit classics that might come to such a system. Ocarina of Time? Mario 64? Star Fox 64? Bomberman Hero?
Of course, Rare’s back catalogue of N64 titles like Banjo-Kazooie and Jet Force Gemini are now Microsoft’s property (playable in Rare Replay on Xbox One, we might begrudgingly add) and thus likely would be absent. Still, there’s always hope Nintendo might work something out for Donkey Kong 64 (which is on Wii U’s Virtual Console) and GoldenEye 007. Hey, why not? If Nintendo has been keeping Star Fox and Star Fox 2 in its back pocket all these years, maybe GoldenEye isn’t that much of a pipe dream!
