While we still may be waiting on the official reveal of Pikmin 4, that’s not the only Pikmin adventure arriving in the near future; at the end of today’s Nintendo Direct broadcast, Nintendo revealed a new, untitled Pikmin game coming to the Nintendo 3DS family of handhelds next year.

Unless previous Pikmin titles, the new 3DS game will be a sidescrolling adventure, emphasizing action and quick decision making. Despite the change in perspective, however, the game will feature familiar Pikmin elements. Players throw Pikmin by tapping on the 3DS’s touch screen, who can move objects and battle enemies. The Pikmin also retain their signature abilities– red Pikmin are immune to fire, while blue Pikmin can travel underwater.

Little else has been revealed about the new Pikmin title for 3DS, but it’s already shaping up to be one of next year’s biggest releases. Are you excited to try a sidescrolling take on the Pikmin series? Let us know in the comments!

I welcome any and all Pikmin games, and this looks adorable. It reminds me a bit of Yoshi Touch & Go and its mechanics of seeing more than you could interact with on the touch screen. Very promising!

I think Pikmin lends itself well to a lot of different styles, and I’m glad to see this kind of experiment. That probably makes my annoyance at Federation Force a bit hypocritical, but I’m ok with that. :^)
