One of the cooler aspects of Nintendo Switch has been the ability to earn Gold Points for purchases of games. Whether physical or digital, consumers would get back five percent of the price of each game bought. These Gold Points could then be used to reduce the price of purchases made thereafter. Pretty swell, right?
Well, perhaps Gold Points were a bit too swell in Nintendo’s opinion, as the program is being shut down. Starting March 24, 2025, consumers will no longer be able to earn Gold Points. There are a couple of exceptions, including if you pre-ordered a game prior to the 03.24.25 cutoff, in which case you’ll still earn points, and if you bought a physical game card and redeem the coins within the redemption window of one year after the software’s release date.
Now, for those of you who have Gold Points in the bank, you’ll be able to use up your stock as normal, which means they’re valid up until 12 months after being added to your My Nintendo account. Once the year passes, they’re dust. Platinum Points, meanwhile, aren’t going anywhere (perhaps because they’re free?), so you’ll be able to continue earning those.
Beyond all that? The fun is over, folks. Now the question becomes, will something similar to the Gold Points program come to Nintendo Switch 2? We’ll keep you posted.
