Splatoon was a bright spot during the otherwise dark times of the Wii U, both figuratively and literally. While the shooter genre was mired in realistic shades of brown and gray, Nintendo’s plucky little game came around with a plethora of colors and an absurd concept and, despite the system’s low sales, managed to sell well. It proved especially successful in Japan, a country not usually known for an affinity for shooters. Fast forward to last year and Splatoon 2 released on the much more successful Switch, so it should come as no surprise that it has been an even bigger success.

It’s been a year since that game launched but there are no signs of it slowing down, especially in Japan. Back when it first released, the game achieved an attach rate of over 55 percent in Nintendo’s home country, according to Japan’s Dengeki Online. A year later, and that rate has barely budged, dropping just a little to around 53 percent. This means that about half of all people buying Switches in Japan are still buying Splatoon 2, a fact no doubt helped by the presence of console bundles including the popular game.

Overall, Splatoon 2 has sold more than 2.5 million units in Japan and millions more around the world. Of course, we can also easily extrapolate that around 5 million Switch units have sold in Japan, so it’s probably fair to note that Nintendo is continuing to do quite well for itself.
