Moon Studios’ Ori series is well loved by fans and critics, and the developer hasn’t written off the possibility of perhaps one day revisiting the series. While they’ve expressed satisfaction with the way the series ended in Ori & the Will of the Wisps, they’re open to the idea of exploring more of the world they created in either a prequel or spin-off.

Don’t expect Moon Studios to dive back into Ori anytime soon, however. The team is currently working on a new action-RPG for publisher Private Division, which has no connection to the Ori series; when asked if a new Ori game could happen either after this new title or alongside it, art director Jeremy Gritton said, “For now we’re focused on our newest title, but we’ve left the door open for a return to Ori’s world. It would really come down to whether or not there’s a story that the team is excited to tell.”

As to whether Moon Studios would prefer to develop a prequel or a spin-off, Gritton said:

“There are a lot of possibilities for stories to tell in [Ori game settings] Niwen or Nibel. As you mentioned, both prequels and spin-offs would give us an opportunity to expand on the lore while giving a fresh perspective.

“Although we don’t have anything planned at the moment, I think there’s a lot of potential there. Sometimes I’ll have an idea that I think would be cool to explore, so I make a note of it and file it away for now. Continuing to expand on what we’ve already established could be a lot of fun.”

Games aren’t the only medium Ori could appear in. Gritton seems open to the idea of telling more stories through comics or animated shows:

“There are some inherent restrictions to storytelling in a game, so that could be really interesting. I think Ori’s world could very easily transfer to other media. In terms of lore, there’s a lot we could dive into and explore more in-depth.”

Another Ori appearance Moon Studios would be open to? Smash Bros. While there’ve been no official discussions between Nintendo and the developer, it would be a natural fit for Ori given the series’ history on Switch. Ori is no stranger to fighting games either, having appeared in Rivals of Aether. Moon Studios Co-Founder Gennadiy Korol said the team would “LOVE” to see Ori in Smash, and that he feels Ori’s moveset and fighting mechanics would be “tons of fun.” He added that it could be “amazing” and encouraged fans to tweet Phil Spencer to show their enthusiasm for the idea.

Would you like to see more from the Ori series? And if so, what? Games, comics, a Smash appearance, more? Let us know below.
