The biggest surprise from Nintendo’s latest Nindies Showcase was the reveal of Cadence of Hyrule, a new game from Crypt of the NecroDancer’s developer, Brace Yourself Games, serving as a crossover between their breakout hit and the Zelda series. This announcement undoubtedly left a lot of people wondering how an independent developer managed to land a deal to use such a big franchise belonging to a company famous for being incredibly protective of its brands.
Allegedly, the answer is surprisingly simple. The two names most associated with Zelda are creator Shigeru Miyamoto, and longtime director/producer Eiji Aonuma, and it turns out both of them are apparently huge fans of Crypt of the NecroDancer.
A source advised Imran Khan, a writer for Game Informer, that, “When that game came to Switch, they apparently just got addicted to it and were like, ‘Find these people. We need to talk to them.'”
The developers previously revealed they asked Nintendo about including Zelda characters in NecroDancer as DLC and were surprised to find how willing Nintendo was. So, it looks like both companies were on the same page which made the process simpler than expected.
