The Wii U was a quirky system from the start, and one example of this was Miiverse, a strange sort of social media service that allowed gamers to share messages and art with one another. Many great games for the system would wind up integrating Miiverse in various interesting ways, and the service would eventually find its way to 3DS as well. Unfortunately, as of today, Miiverse’s days are numbered.

On November 7 at 10 PM PST, Nintendo will be shutting Miiverse down on all platforms. Naturally, quite a few games will be affected by this change. Some games, like Splatoon or Super Mario 3D World really just used the service for aesthetic purposes, so while the players might miss that added sense of community, the core gameplay and features won’t change. The impact on Mario Kart 8 will be slightly more significant, as players will no longer be able to participate in tournaments and the option of uploading highlights to YouTube is inseparably linked to Miiverse, thus removing that option as well. Tournaments, as well as level sharing, in Super Smash Bros. will also cease to be an option. The most severely impacted game appears to be Mario vs. Donkey Kong: Tipping Stars, which required players to share and rate levels through Miiverse in order to earn the Stars needed to unlock all of the game’s content. The game’s main campaign and everything else linked with it will still function as normal.

Thankfully, it’s not all bad news because users will be able to save their contributions to the system. By registering through the Miiverse website, players will receive an email from Nintendo several weeks after Miiverse shuts down, that will allow them to save their posts. So, if you can’t bear the thought of losing your Miiverse contributions, you’ll want to remember to act sooner rather than later.
