Pokémon GO set the stage for augmented reality, or AR, to firmly take root as a viable part of the video game landscape. At least, that was the case when it comes to mobile games. For consoles, virtual reality has been the go-to alternative interface for gaming, with AR practically nonexistent. That might change when Mario Kart Live: Home Circuit makes its way to consumers on October 16.

Mario Kart Live is a fascinating hybrid of a physical RC kart (piloted by either Mario or Luigi), a camera, and a Nintendo Switch as the remote control. The feed from the camera is overlaid (here’s the AR bit) with a variety of Mario Kart assets including obstacles, racers, and more, making it appear as though the world of the game is mixed with the player’s own. Up to four people will be able to partake in the action, working together to design a real course that loops around the room or location of their choosing. Using special gates and markers, players arrange the track and then pilot the RC cars through it. Here’s how Nintendo breaks it down:

“Race a real-world Mario Kart through your home! Use the Nintendo Switch system to control your kart and watch as it reacts to what’s happening in the game as you boost and drift to victory. Your in-home course comes to life on-screen with a view from right behind the driver’s seat.”

“Place gates and customize courses in the real world, then see them come alive with different in-game environments like jungles and snowscapes and obstacles like Piranha Plants. Use objects from around the house to customize your courses and add challenge, then watch the game transform your home into the Mario Kart world.”

The Mario kart and Luigi kart Mario Kart Live bundles come with their respective plumber’s RC car, a charging cable for the vehicle, four Gates, and two Arrow Signboards. Each retails for $99.99.
