Speed has always been important when it comes to the Mario Kart franchise, but the latest iteration in the series is already leaving past titles in the dust. Mario Kart 8 Deluxe sold a staggering 459k copies in North America this past Friday, making it the fastest selling title in franchise history.
According to Nintendo, the attach rate for Deluxe is 45 percent. While that number would be impressive enough on its own, it’s even more substantial given the fact that the title is an enhanced port of a game that originally released on Wii U nearly three years ago! Mario Kart 8 Deluxe‘s success likely bodes well for Switch owners that may have missed other Wii U classics, such as Super Smash Bros. and Super Mario Maker, both of which have had rumored enhanced ports of their own. Considering that the Wii U only sold around 13 million units in its lifetime, there are a lot of gamers that may have missed out on some of the system’s best.

Went to Target Friday morning to buy Mario Kart (along with the free “puzzle cube”). I was the fourth one there and purchased the fourth and final NES Classic. My sons wondered why two people in the parking lot offered to buy it off me for $150. Crazy morning.
I had been hesitant about double-dipping on Kart, but the driver-assist and auto acceleration features have brought out the racing fan in my four year old. What an awesome addition! And it’s of course a savvy move by Nintendo to get their hooks into little ones and create life-time customers.
Kotaku had a wonderful piece this weekend about a girl that couldn’t play Mario Kart before that’s benefitted from smart steering. Gotta leave it to Nintendo to come up with stuff that benefits new players.
