Metroidvania style games aren’t exactly uncommon nowadays, with the genre offering developers plenty of opportunities for interesting gameplay ideas rooted in a familiar framework. So, it should come as no surprise that a new one is coming to Switch and it’s also offering some unique twists on the formula, as well.
At first glance, Mable & The Wood appears pretty standard for the genre as you acquire new shape-shifting powers by defeating bosses and then use those abilities to traverse a fantasy world with a pixel art aesthetic. The twist, however, is that you can actually complete the game without killing anything, including the bosses. Furthermore, the story will change depending on how the player chooses to play the game.
No-kill runs are a common option within many stealth games, but it’s not something you typically see in the Metroidvania genre. It will be interesting to see how this plays out when the game releases for download October 10 for $14.99.
