The churn of employees in AAA game development continues apace, with talk now of layoffs allegedly coming to Eidos-Montréal. The studio, which is owned by Embracer Group and has worked on games like Guardians of the Galaxy, Shadow of the Tomb Raider, and many others, is said to have laid off more than a dozen workers in recent weeks. These cuts come following layoffs in March earlier this year when 75 workers were let go.
The word hasn’t been made official by Eidos-Montréal, but workers have been taking to social media channels, including LinkedIn, to report the news. This particular round of layoffs seems to have been centered around design, production, writing, 3D art, concept art, and animation workers. As has been the case for years now, the AAA game space continues to hemorhage workers at a frightening clip, speaking to underlying rot that has manifested in the form of projects that consumers aren’t interested in purchasing, as well as reports of rampant negative workplace culture, including things like toxic positivity ruining the creative process.
Will we see a change anytime soon? It’s hard to say, but with the success of titles like Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 dominating sales charts and the hearts of critics and fans alike, it’s seeming more and more like the best games aren’t coming from the big companies anywhere near as much as they used to. We’ll continue to report as we learn more about these and other layoffs throughout the industry.
