Last Splatfest Will Have Repercussions in Splatoon 2 Apparently

Competition might have torn the Squid Sisters apart.

As dedicated Splatoon fans likely know, the game featured a narrative that mostly served as a fun and silly way to set up the game’s unique gameplay and style, and to possibly explain how humanity went extinct. While the sequel looks like it will continue the original’s lighthearted tone, a recent update to the game’s website suggests that there might be an interesting bit of continuity inspired by a seemingly innocuous in-game event, the last Splatfest.

Every few weeks, Splatoon featured a weekend-long Splatfest, a competitive event in which players chose one of two competing sides in a popularity poll and then faced off to decide which was better through a mix of popularity and game skill. The final Splatfest had players vote for Callie or Marie, the two popular in-game idols who developed their own real-world fanbases. Marie ultimately claimed victory, which might have strained the singers’ relationship or maybe even driven them apart in Splatoon 2. Of course, so far this is just based on a a relatively vague statement on the game’s website and the fact the Squid Sisters aren’t shown together in any Splatoon 2 trailers or screenshots yet.

In other Splatoon 2 news, Nintendo has announced it will be hosting a tournament at this year’s E3. Stay tuned for more details about the tournament and the game in the near future as both are just a few months away.
