Last month’s announcement of the Nintendo Labo VR Kit came as a bit of a surprise. While Sony was quick to embrace VR, Nintendo has been a bit more hesitant regarding the technology. The latest Labo kit will release one week from today, but Nintendo has once again surprised fans with the announcement that two major Switch releases will be compatible with the new hardware: Super Mario Odyssey and The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild!

According to Nintendo’s video, the entirety of Breath of the Wild will be playable in VR mode, and players won’t have to start a new save file to use it. Super Mario Odyssey‘s VR option seems a bit smaller; Nintendo is referring to it as “a bite-sized bonus experience.” There will be three playable missions in total, in which Mario will be tasked with collecting coins and music notes. The three missions take place in three of the game’s kingdoms: Cap, Seaside and Luncheon.
This is not the first time Nintendo has updated a first-party title to add Toy-Con compatibility; the Labo wheel was added as a control option for Mario Kart 8 Deluxe last year. While these additions merely seem to represent Nintendo dipping a toe in the VR pool, the prospect of playing a Mario or Zelda game in VR is certainly exciting!
The update for both games will arrive April 25. Are these additions enough to get you to pick up the Nintendo Labo VR Kit? Let us know in the comments below!
