When Pokémon hit the world like a ton of bricks, the video game industry as a whole scrambled to compensate. A bunch of different ‘Mon-alikes (or Pokémon copycat games if you don’t like made-up terminology) sprang onto the scene following the release of Pokémon Red and Blue, including Dragon Warrior Monsters in 1998, and Robopon and Digimon World in 2000. Wedged right in the middle of those releases, however, was Monster Rancher for PlayStation in 1999. Developed by Tecmo, the game allowed players to raise and battle creatures much like Pokémon, but it had a unique feature that would really help set it apart.

Fans playing Monster Rancher could take any of their music CDs, insert them into their PlayStation, and the game would read the metadata on the disc to create a new monster. It was this feature alongside the game’s different take on raising creatures that made it so popular, garnering a small but passionate fanbase as a result. If anyone has been itching to relive the glory days of the original Monster Rancher, there’s some good news, as Koei Tecmo has revealed that the title will be coming to Nintendo Switch!
That’s right, Monster Rancher will be hitting Switch, iOS, and Android platforms at some point this year. A special CD database will be utilized to replicate creating monsters, but whether or not it will be as fun as popping an actual disc in is up for debate. Regardless, it’s pretty cool news, though there is no word just yet of Monster Rancher coming to Switch in North America or Europe. We’ll keep you all posted, but until then sound off on social media and in the comments to let us know whether it was Californication or No Angel that you slipped into your PlayStation, back in the day— and which monster it nabbed you!
